In her portrait series of Nigerian expatriates in Georgia, Mariam Amurvelashvili explores the interaction between migrants and the unfamiliar environment they came to live in. The dim, murky lighting of almost lifeless everyday scenes, the static postures and nearly expressionless faces of the models contrast sharply with the vibrant colors of their attire and their personal belongings. This dissonance evokes a sensation of incongruity and estrangement, highlighting profound human and cultural levels of the experience of those living far away from their homeland.
